Can I wish you, and those you love, a very Happy New Year. I hope it brings you joy and fulfilment.
I have had the luxury of reading over the Christmas break.......I love to have a good book 'on the go' at all times; and my last 2 have been 'crackers': 'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel is an Orange Prize winner - and deservedly so. It's a BIG book.....some 600 pages but - as a slow reader - I ripped my way through it. It's about the rise of Thomas Cromwell - from abused blacksmith's son to Henry VIII's trusted adviser. It's also about political and personal intrigue.....and the elusive quality of integrity.
My second read.....almost at the end, is 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy. This is a post-apocalypse tale of a father and son seeking to survive; it echoes William Golding's classic 'Lord of the Flies'. It's a hard edged and unsentimental work in which any human survivors (of climate change?) are selfish, cannibalistic and savage!
Happy 2010!
